TADS 3 Debugger tutorial

September 29th, 2010 Comments off

I’ve been beavering away at my projects lately with not a lot of interesting news thus far. Nevertheless I’ve taken a bit of time on the side to write up a tutorial for using the debugger in TADS 3 Workbench. TADS 3 is an interactive fiction programming language that I’m quite proficient at, and a bunch of people wanted guidance on using the debugger, so here we are.

As a project update, Kung Fu Legends has moved into some deep design phase for the underlying simulation. The Day After is still waiting on action cards. Breathe still tickles the back of my brain. And my other projects sit on the backburner, as always.

Recommendations

I’ve put up two pages on my recommended reading for maths and game design. I thought of doing one for general programming, but the recommendations weren’t particularly insightful (just C++ reference books and websites, the Art of Computer Programming etc). Hope you find something of interest in those two pages.

Small radar blip

July 11th, 2010 Comments off

I’m been on holidays for the last while, so sorry for the lack of posts. I didn’t want to announce that I’d be overseas for many weeks, because that’d just get me onĀ Please Rob Me (or similar site). I’m back now and unpacked (mostly… *shifty eyes*) I’ve also joined a tabletop RPG group and had my first game with them. I haven’t played non-computer RPG for over ten years, so it’s interesting to come back with new ideas and old habits. I’m also taking mental notes on the strengths and weaknesses of this style of gaming to inform my design decisions in Kung Fu Master.

On the writing side of things, I’m trying a new plan of attack. I want to finish the first draft of Breathe by the end of the year and my current method of “writing when I get to go on my rare retreats” is not working at all.

On the maths side of things (yep, my world is triangular ;) ), I’ve figured out the details on the next bit of my PhD exposition, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

RSS Timeout issue fixed

April 24th, 2010 1 comment

Some RSS readers/validators were complaining of timeout errors when they tried to get my RSS feed. Turns out the LaTeX plugin wasn’t caching its images so it took too long to create the RSS feed containing a jillion small LaTeX formulas. Hopefully this has fixed the issue.

A Beginning

March 28th, 2010 Comments off

Welcome to the beginning of my new blog. I’ve had blogs in various forms before, but typically ones used amongst my social group. I’ve had the difficulty of picking my audience – in between the mundane mentions of my life, I wanted to talk about ideas I had, investigate something technical or explain how I thought about something. This blog is focussed entirely on this latter sort of articles. Hopefully I can say something neat about writing, mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence or any of my other interests.

My webpage will contain more solid explanations of my projects, while this blog will be a little bit more dynamic.
